Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified into a major Category 4 storm, producing maximum sustained wind speeds of 145 mph. If it maintains its strength, it could become the strongest hurricane to make landfall over the island since the National Hurricane Center started keeping records.
Hurricane Meslissa has caused massive destruction across the Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of at least 34 people.The storm has hit several Caribbean countries including Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cub.
The federal government is advising Canadians to avoid travelling to certain areas in the Caribbean as Hurricane Melissa rips through the region.
