Gov. Kathy Hochul is still scrambling to lock down money for her $154 million surge of NYPD on overnight subway trains, even as the first wave of cops hit the tunnels this week. Only half the cash needed for the six-month surge is lined up — and Hochul asked for the remaining $77 million in the budget plan she unveiled Tuesday.

State of the State address, Hochul proposed new measures to improve subway safety, including more NYPD patrols, new protective barriers, and more.

In a statement, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Hochul’s plan will allow for two officers to ride every overnight train. But she said more needs to be done to deal with the ongoing issue of repeat offenders who commit a disproportionate number of crimes in the subways, which she called the “root of the issue.”
