Jury selection was scheduled to began in L.A. County Superior Court on Tuesday in the first of a series of closely-watched lawsuits seeking to prove social apps inflict harm on children, but a last-minute agreement by TikTok left uncertainty around how the case would proceed.

Top executives from Meta, TikTok, and YouTube are expected to testify during the trial. According to court documents, KGM began using social media at the age of 10, despite her mother’s attempts to block access through third-party parental control software.

The move comes the week before Meta — along with TikTok and Google’s YouTube — is scheduled to stand trial in Los Angeles over its apps’ harms to children. Teens will still be able to access Meta’s AI assistant, just not the characters.
