No flags other than that of the United States (and two others related to the country’s military) are to be flown or displayed at any of the country’s embassies or outposts, according to a new policy ordered by President Donald Trump and implemented by the State Department.

The U.S. State Department reportedly adopted a new policy under the Trump administration that blocks U.S. embassies and outposts from flying Pride and Black Lives Matter flags.

Prior to this, displays of the Pride flag outside State Department buildings were banned under a $1.2 trillion funding agreement that Joe Biden signed in March.

The administration of President Joe Biden reversed Trump’s ban on rainbow flags at embassies. Biden’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken told American embassies and diplomatic missions that they can fly the Pride flag again as well as “other symbols connoting support for LGBTQ rights based on what is ‘appropriate in light of local conditions.’”

During Biden’s administration, several embassies took advantage of his policy. For instance, the U.S. Embassy in Nassau flew a Pride flag to celebrate Pride month in 2021 and the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Brazil flew a Black Lives Matter flag to celebrate Black history month in 2022.
