That 2024 announcement comes on the heels of the removal of the Wells Fargo sign from the city’s tallest building — the 49-year-old, 37-story 1 Independent Square tower. The bank reduced its footprint in the nearly 900,000-square-foot tower from seven floors down to two floors last year.

Wells Fargo & Co. is laying off 90 employees as it closes a division in Jacksonville, the San Francisco-based bank said in a March 4 letter to city and state officials.

Wells Fargo notified 33 employees of their coming layoff from the company's West Des Moines campus, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN). The workers will be officially released a month after the notification date on April 4.
