It’s customary for the Champions League to overdeliver on drama but rarely quite like Tuesday night’s game between Barcelona and Benfica, which featured nine goals, a sensational comeback, and some of the most calamitous defending the competition has seen so far.

Barcelona have secured their passage into the last 16 of the Champions League with six wins and one defeat to date. Liverpool, who beat Lille 2-1, top the league stage from Barca in second, and are the only other side to be assured to skip the playoff round at this stage.

Benfica looked in control at half time thanks to a Vangelis Pavlidis hat-trick, countered by a Lewandowski penalty, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead. The Eagles’ sparkling performance in the opening 45 minutes was fuelled by an out-of-this-world display by left-back Andreas Carreras.
