Menefee and Edwards came out as the frontrunners of the 16-candidate crowded contest. Other Democrats who vied for the months-long vacant seat included state Rep. Jolanda Jones, former TX-18 candidate Isaiah Martin, Stephen Huey, Feldon Bonner II and Valencia Williams.

The runoff winner will serve out the term of U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner, who died in office earlier this year. The seat will immediately be up for election again in 2026 for a full two-year term.
