Smoke from wildfires in Manitoba, a Western province facing its worst fire season in 30 years, has created hazardous air quality conditions across Eastern Canada and the United States.

Wildfire smoke degrades air quality in swaths of Ontario, with Toronto ranking among the worst in the world on Monday.

Wildfire smoke has been blowing into the city since Sunday though residents should should expect some relief by early morning Thursday, Environment Canada said.

Environment Canada is warning of poor air quality and extreme heat in Toronto on Monday as southern Ontario braces for a week filled with hot and humid weather.

After a seven day heat wave, Toronto will see temperatures cool down to seasonal levels by Thursday evening. This comes after smoky air in Toronto prompted many camps to make last-minute changes, especially on Monday, when the city’s Air Quality Health Index reached a “very high risk” rating of over 10.

Much of Central Canada, Manitoba and Saskatchewan were placed under special air quality statements or warnings on Monday due to smoke from wildfires, as Environment Canada advised residents to limit time outdoors and watch for smoke exposure symptoms.

There’s a layer of haze in the air, as smoke from burning wildfires has blown into southern Ontario. And according to the World Air Quality Index website, Toronto is one of the worst places in the world right now for air quality.

Toronto and the GTA are under a heat wave and poor air quality warning issued by Environment Canada on July 14, 2025, due to wildfire smoke from northern Ontario. The poor air quality is expected to persist from Monday into Tuesday.
