Besides burning the most urban area, the Eaton and Palisades fires are the largest ever for California in January. Alexandra Syphard, a senior research scientist at the Conservation Biology Institute, said their timing and path through the city “may have no precedent in history.”

Thursday, 10:30 a.m. PST The Palisades Fire’s containment jumped to 22% while Cal Fire reported 55% containment for the Eaton Fire, 98% containment for the Hurst Fire and 85% containment for the Auto Fire (only a few red flag warnings remain in effect for parts of Los Angeles County and adjacent regions).

In response, advocates like the Los Angeles Tenants Union—an organization that says it’s “fighting for the human right to housing for all” by demanding “safe, affordable housing and universal rent control”—have begun to track allegations of rental price gouging and have renewed calls for an emergency eviction moratorium and a rent freeze.
