People in Mississippi, particularly in Oxford, are being slammed with winter weather as intense snow and ice continue to cover most of the U.S. this weekend.

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — The weekend’s ice storm left behind major damage in several parts of north Mississippi. Tens of thousands of people are without power. Oxford reported extensive damage, including downed power lines and trees.

Major ice accumulations of a half an inch or more could lead to widespread power outages and will make travel impossible.

As a winter storm brings freezing temperatures to Mississippi, emergency shelters have opened to help residents stay warm.
