Japan is considering relaxing automobile safety rules for imports as part of its tariff negotiations with the United States, Nikkei Asia reported on Sunday. Japan has been hit with 24% levies on its exports to the U.

President Donald Trump said negotiators made “big progress” after a meeting with a Japanese delegation on Wednesday aimed at securing a deal that would avoid higher levies he has threatened against US trading partners.

While Trump has expressed optimism about agreements with Europe and China, among others, so far it’s been just that: positive comments, but no signed deals.
