Scientists have developed a proof-of-concept vaccine that could offer broad protection against all known and emerging variants of highly pathogenic avian influenza (A5) viruses, including those that have yet to evolve.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in commercial turkey flocks in North Dakota and South Dakota on November 3.

State officials are asking backyard and commercial poultry owners in Connecticut to “implement strong biosecurity practices” this fall to protect their flocks.

Darlene Konkle, a state veterinarian with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, said the current strain of the bird flu was detected in Wisconsin in 2022. Largely, the cases pop up around the spring or fall, during the time that wild waterfowl are migrating.

The Walla Walla County Department of Community Health has been notified about three wild birds in Walla Walla County that tested positive for avian influenza, or bird flu.

A 1.9-mile (3km) protection zone has been set up after bird flu was detected in East Sussex. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said it had confirmed "highly pathogenic avian influenza" in large commercial poultry unit near Uckfield in the Wealden District.
