McCarthy's hand injury leaves Vikings in lurch again with latest setback raising long-term questions
How quickly the Vikings believe his mechanics can be improved and his consistency can increase might not matter as much as whether they feel he can be counted on to regularly take the field. After hurting his throwing hand during Minnesota's victory over the New York Giants on Sunday,
J.J. McCarthy will not play when the Minnesota Vikings host the Detroit Lions at 3:30 p.m. CT on Christmas Day. Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell ruled McCarthy out for the Week 17 game after it was discovered that McCarthy has a hairline fracture in his throwing hand. O'Connell said the injury shouldn't require surgery.
McCarthy left Minnesota's Week 16 matchup against the New York Giants after suffering a hand injury. After X-rays came back negative, it appeared that McCarthy had suffered a broken bone in his hand. The injury occurred when he hit his hand on the helmet of Vikings defensive end Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins.
Though the Vikings didn’t actually practice on Monday afternoon at TCO Performance Center, they are required by the NFL to release an estimated injury report. They listed McCarthy as a non participant with a right hand injury, which, in turn, raises questions about his availability moving forward.
