In 1937, the aviator Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe. The official and most widely accepted theory concludes that Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan ran out of fuel, missed their target of Howland Island, and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. They were battling overcast skies and radio problems, and their last transmissions suggested they were lost. The subsequent U.S. Navy and Coast Guard search was the largest and most expensi
