His piece Gateway Star gives a sense of the elements popping out at you as you feel pulled in through the center of the painting. He also uses a technique called impasto, where paint is built up thickly, often achieved by mixing paint with another medium like cold wax. The painting matched the sky earlier, but that's not the case now. The Atlantic winds are blowing in clouds and casting us into darkness. Now that it doesn’t match, it doesn’t feel right to keep forcing the painting to change. I like the darker blue version of the sky, and this version of the painting feels complete to me.
