Last year we explored an old abandoned mine with a huge bat colony. The bats were mostly funnel-eared bats (Natalidae) and mustached bats (Mormoopidae) but overall there were about 8 different species. We took a 140min-long video of one of the mine exits and thanks to the amazing automated tracking and counting tool, thrutracker, we now know that 25910 bats exited during this time. Yes, that is accounting for all reentries! This confirms the site as the largest bat colony of the country to date.
