Exactly 85 years ago, on January 31, 1936, the film that set Humphrey Bogart on the path to stardom premiered in St. Louis, Missouri. Bogie played the part of gangster Duke Mantee in the Broadway version of The Petrified Forest, and he landed the film role only because his Broadway co-star Leslie Howard (a much bigger star at the time) refused to appear in the film unless Warner Brothers cast Bogie as Duke Mantee.
