LAOAG CITY, country's "Sunshine City", the capital of Ilocos Norte Laoag was first occupied by the Spaniards in 1572 and is now the largest city in northern Luzon. The name of the city "Laoag" is derived from an Ilocano term meaning light or brightness. According to Buzeta, an Augustinian missionary, in his "Diccionarios Geografico-Estadístico-Histórico de las Filipinas," Laoag has a clear atmosphere, presenting a beautiful, blue skyline. This is the reason the place was given the name "Laoag."
