Supporting Sensory Avoiders1. Create calm environments:Use soft lighting, reduce noise, and provide quiet spaces. 2. Prepare for sensory challenges:Give warnings before loud sounds or changes (e.g., “The vacuum will start soon”). 3. Offer choices:Let them decide whether to join in sensory-heavy activities. 4. Provide calming input:Deep pressure (weighted blankets, gentle hugs) can be soothing if welcomed. 5. Respect boundaries:Never force participation; build comfort gradually.Supporting Sensory

Sensory avoiders may feel overwhelmed during group play—covering ears, pushing others away, or leaving the game. Meanwhile, sensory seekers are drawn to toys, hugs, movement, and sound—finding comfort and connection through sensory input. Understanding these differences helps us respond wisely: • For avoiders: give them quiet spaces, advance warnings, and gentle choices. • For seekers: channel their energy into sensory-rich play—like squeezes, textures, or active games. If your child isn’t a sensory seeker, they may be a sensory avoider, like Jace. With the exception of a few things Jace is almost completely a sensory avoider and avoids sensory input at all costs. Sensory avoiders may seem clumsy or lazy but that’s not true, they just appear that way because they are avoiding sensory input. I find it so interesting that I have one child who is an extreme sensory seeker and one who is very much a sensory avoider! Complete opposites but also quite a bit alike. #s

✨ What is Proprioception ✨ Also known as the hidden 6th sense, this is the body's ability to sense its own movements, actions, and location in space. Without proprioception, you wouldn't be able to move your body without thinking about your next step. Put it to the test: Close your eyes and bring your left hand to touch the tip of your nose. Your ability to sense where each of your body parts is and where they need to go to complete this movement without obstruction is proprioception. Cool, righ

Sensory seekers are under-stimulated. Their nervous system needs more input to organise itself. That’s why movement, deep pressure, chewing, and resistance help them regulate. Sensory avoiders are over-stimulated. Their nervous system is in protection mode. That’s why reducing input, increasing predictability, and creating sensory safety helps them calm. Same behaviour ≠ same cause. And regulation always comes before learning. These behaviours aren’t habits to stop, they’re signals to interpret.
